Dear Mr Lim
Application for Management Trainee (Sales)

I am pleased to find your company’s job opening for management trainee (Sales) though my school’s career portal. I am currently a final year Electrical Engineering student at National University of Singapore. Due to my interest in corporate finance and accounting, I am also pursuing an accounting qualification (ACCA) at Kaplan financial.

There are two reasons why I think I might be suitable for this position. First, I am passionate about sales. During the past four years, I had been working as a part time retail and sales staff for Sony Vaio Co. I have gained extensive experience in I.T products sales and consistently hitting or outperforming the sales target. I enjoy serving my customers, find out their needs and commit myself to providing them with a great service experience. Being a senior sales promoter in the company, I also had the chance to educate new promoters on promoting techniques and product know-hows. These includes sales tactics, product demonstration and negotiation techniques. My greatest achievement was when I lead a group of junior promoters to clinch the top sales team at a local IT show in 2012.

The second reason is my ability to speak fluent Japanese. As this job requires the successful candidate to be posted to Japan for two years, I believe my knowledge in Japanese language shall be an asset. I had been learning Japanese for the past three years at my University and during this period, I had achieved the highest level of the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test). I feel that I am been equipped with both the language and cultural skills to communicate in Japanese and work in a Japanese company.

I have enclosed a copy of my résumé for your reference. I hope to hear from you soon.

Thank You.
Sincerely,
Mok Siu Chung

  1. Siu Chung,

I feel you are highly suitable for the job already. A few minor amendments and you are good to go!

Regarding the ACCA certificate that you are obtaining, you may want to highlight how it adds to this job. For example, you will be better able to interpret the balance sheets and have a better picture of how the sales are doing. By doing this, you will not give the reader the impression that you are planning to leave for an accounting job when the time is right for you.

At the last paragraph, you can leave your contact number and email behind for easy reference.

The Engineering degree can be put to good use in terms of job that requires analysis. For example, analysing sales data. You may also emphasis on the organised way of handling things which can be applied to sales.

Lastly, you can include a short explanation of how you discovered your passion for sales. It is because you are an engineer by training but something might have caused you to make that shift in direction to sales. you can make it more obvious to the reader.

    Thank you for reading!

  2. Hello Siu Chang

I like your cover letter. It is clear and concise .One of the good points that you had mentioned in your cover letter is your ability to have effective cross-cultural communication with the Japanese through the mastery of the Japanese language. This is something that makes you stand out from the rest of the applicants.

On the other hand, you can elaborate more on how the ACCA qualification that you are currently studying helps value-add the company that you are applying for. I also agree with William that your contact number and email number should be included so that they are able to contact you.

Hope the few pointers that I have given you will be of help in editing your cover letter. =)

    Regards
    Kelvin
